A week of stress finally ends, students re-enter the temple of knowledge

Muslim girl students protest as new government rule bans hijab in institutions

Some schools have now been reopened from Monday in Udupi, Karnataka. The educational institutions which were put on halt amid the hijab protests are now put back to their regular routine, while also being guarded by the cops.

The news: The Udupi state in Karnataka has had its few schools running on Monday. these schools were closed since last week following the rise in hijab Row controversy.

The ongoing issue of Muslim girls wearing a hijab to schools and colleges is widely seen as an act to sideline the minority class of Muslims in India.

This act is also being regarded as a gruesome act by the Hindu-dominated authorities.

What’s going on: Today when the institutions opened back, the police stood guard, protecting students in their uniforms, while a few students even wore hijabs. The act was seen at a government girls’ school, which is the exact place where the issue first barged in.

  • Authorities have banned gatherings of more than five people within 200 meters of educational institutions.
  • Classes from primary to high school have begun, but the higher grades and colleges are still shut.

What are they saying: This was done after a state court asked the students not to wear any religious clothing while attending the classes, be it saffron shawls, scarves or hijabs.

  • The court said in an interim order last week, “Whether wearing of hijab in the classroom is a part of essential religious practice of Islam in the light of constitutional guarantees needs a deeper examination.”
  • The hijab row issue has been in the spotlight after protests took place last week.
  • The protests against the order issued on Feb. 5 on uniforms by the state, seems to be an act of gaining and manipulating votes, in an already BJP-ruled state.
  • The party derives its support mainly from the majority Hindu community, which forms about 80 per cent of India’s population of roughly 1.4 billion, while Muslims account for about 13 per cent.
  • According to one of the students, Ayesha Imthiaz, “Religion had been questioned and insulted by a place which I had considered as a temple of education.”
  • She felt humiliated as the authorities asked her to take off the hijab, prior to attending the class.

The issue has now even prompted expressions of support for Muslim girls and women from the U.S. government and Nobel Peace laureate Malala Yousafzai.
