Alternative routes being generated to evacuate Indians from Ukraine

The administration is putting in place other evacuation routes for Indian nationals stranded in Ukraine due to the shutdown of the eastern European country’s airspace to commercial planes, informed the Indian government after closure of Ukraine airspace.

The news: According to the sources, more Russian-speaking staff have been dispatched to the embassy in Kyiv and are being deployed in Ukraine’s neighbouring nations, with high-level talks taking place at the ministry of foreign affairs.

What’s going on: The Indian embassy earlier in the day issued an advisory advising its citizens to be calm and stay put wherever they were in Ukraine, citing the unpredictability of the situation following Russia’s incursion.

  • “Ukraine’s current situation is extremely precarious. Please be calm and safe wherever you are, whether at home, in hostels, hotels, or in transit,” the warning stated.
  • Several cities around Ukraine have reported explosions, including the capital Kyiv and the separatist provinces of Donetsk and Luhansk.
  • Ukraine claims to have shot down six Russian planes, while Russia claims to have neutralised Ukraine’s fleet and harmed its air defences.
  • Russian bombardment has killed at least eight people and injured nine others, according to Reuters, citing an adviser to Ukraine’s Minister of Internal Affairs.
  • As per reports, Ukraine’s border agency stated on Thursday that Russian military vehicles crossed the border in four northern districts, including Luhansk and Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city.
  • Dmytro Kuleba, Ukraine’s foreign minister, has asked world leaders to thoroughly isolate Russia in all forms and apply crippling penalties.

Almost every major country, including the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and Canada, has denounced Russia’s conduct. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged Putin to end the conflict “in the sake of humanity,” warning of dire consequences for Ukraine and the rest of the globe.
