BBC resumes its service in Russia after a short pause

BBC News correspondents in Russia have resumed their broadcasts. Earlier this week, BBC had put their work on pause as the Russian authorities had introduced tough new media laws.

The news: A few new laws by the Russians allowed them to take action against anyone found guilty of spreading “fake” news about Russia’s armed services. The punishment would be facing up to 15 years in prison as per the law.

  • Alongwith BBC, several other Western news organizations have also halted operations. The New York Times said on Tuesday that it was pulling its workers out of the nation.

What’s going on: BBC correspondents Steve Rosenberg and Jenny Hill reported from Moscow on Tuesday in their first broadcasts since the suspension.

  • Other news organizations that stopped working in Russia at the end of last week were CNN, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Bloomberg News, and others.
  • EFE, the Spanish news agency, RAI, the Italian station RAI, and Germany’s ARD and ZDF are also the ones who suspended their service from the country.

What are they saying: Tim Davie, the BBC’s director general, said on Friday that he was unwilling to put employees “in risk of criminal prosecution simply for doing their duties.” The BBC’s return of broadcasting coincided with the New York Times’ decision to cease publication.

  • After “careful deliberation,” the BBC has chosen to restart work. “We have evaluated the ramifications of the new legislation as well as the urgent need to report from within Russia,” the statement read.
  • “Russia’s new legislation seeks to criminalize independent, truthful journalism about the war in Ukraine,” a newspaper representative said.
