Biden is extremely confident of Putin invading Ukraine

US President Joe Biden has stated that he strongly believes that Russian President Vladimir Putin has decided to invade Ukraine and that an attack could occur in the “coming days”.
He even stated that the assessment was based on US intelligence, which indicated that the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, would be a target.

The news: Western countries have accused Russia of staging a phony crisis in Ukraine’s breakaway eastern regions in order to justify an offensive.

  • On the other hand, the US also believes that around 169,000-190,000 Russian troops have already reached the borders of Ukraine, which includes Russian-backed fighters in the self-proclaimed republics of Donetsk and Luhansk in eastern Ukraine.

What’s going on: On Friday, the leaders of two separatist areas announced an evacuation of residents, claiming that Ukraine had intensified shelling and was planning an attack.

  • Meanwhile, Ukraine has repeatedly said that no attack is planned, and Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba has dismissed what he calls “Russian disinformation reports”.
  • Denis Pushilin, the leader of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DNR), announced the evacuation in a video allegedly shot on Friday. However, a BBC analysis of the metadata revealed that it was recorded two days prior to the outbreak of hostilities.
  • According to the Kremlin, President Putin has ordered the establishment of refugee camps near the border, as well as the payment of “emergency” aid to people arriving from separatist areas.
  • As per Russian state media, several buses carrying local residents arrived in Russia.

What are they saying: President Biden stated in a televised address from the White House that the US has “reason to believe” that Russian forces are “planning to and intend to attack Ukraine in the coming week, in the coming days.”

  • “As of now, I am convinced that he has made the decision,” Biden added, referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Previously, the president and his top officials stated that they had no idea if this was the case.
  • However, he stated that Russia could “still choose diplomacy” and that “it is not too late to de-escalate and return to the negotiating table.”
  • The announcement of evacuations was described by the US State Department as a “cynical” move by Moscow to “distract the world from the fact that Russia is building up its forces in preparation for an attack.”
  • The evacuations, according to the White House, were an example of Moscow using misinformation as a pretext for war.
