CBI arrests former NSE CEO Chitra Ramkrishna

The Central Bureau of Investigation on Sunday arrested Chitra Ramkrishna, the former CEO of the National Stock Exchange in New Delhi, after a court denied her anticipatory bail request.

The news: The 59-year-old has been on the CBI’s radar in connection with a probe involving former NSE employee Anand Subramaniam.

  • Chitra Ramkrishna served as NSE’s CEO between 2013 and 2016.

What happened: Ramkrishna was accused of emailing a “yogi who lives in the Himalayas” confidential information about the National Stock Exchange.

  • It is suspected that the yogi was Anand Subramaniam, who was arrested earlier this month in connection with the case.
  • The matter came to light after SEBI (Securities and Exchanges Board of India) made public its findings in connection with alleged unfair practices at NSE between 2010 and 2015.
  • SEBI in its order discovered documentary evidence proving that Chitra Ramkrishna shared internal NSE confidential information with an unknown person by sending her correspondence to an email address from 2014 to 2016.
  • An FIR was also filed in connection with the case by the CBI in 2018 in which a stockbroker had been accused of manipulating the NSE’s system.
