In a joint statement released on Friday, Russia and China called for NATO’s expansion to be halted, while Moscow stated that it fully supports Beijing’s stance on Taiwan and opposes Taiwanese independence in any form.

The news: During Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to China for the Winter Olympics, the two leaders issued a joint statement that included severe condemnation of the U.S.

  • Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping enjoyed friendly and substantial conversations in Beijing, according to the Kremlin, and the relationship is defined as an advanced collaboration with a unique character.
  • Putin also announced a big new gas contract with China, signalling a strengthening of ties between the two neighbours at a time when their relations with the West are strained.

What they’re saying: “The Russian side reaffirms its support for the One-China principle, confirms that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China, and opposes any forms of independence of Taiwan,” the joint statement said.

  • The two countries expressed concern about “the advancement of U.S. plans to develop global missile defence and deploy its elements in various regions of the world, combined with capacity building of high-precision non-nuclear weapons for disarming strikes and other strategic objectives.”
  • They stated their opposition to future NATO enlargement and demanded that the alliance quit its “ideologized Cold War methods.”

What’s going on: The Kremlin has made a major demand in its confrontation with the West over Ukraine: a halt to NATO’s eastward expansion. The U.S. has rejected some of Moscow’s fundamental suggestions, but has indicated that it is open to discussing other issues such as arms control.

  • According to the joint statement, China supports Russia’s initiatives to provide legally binding security assurances in Europe.
  • The presidents also highlighted the necessity to expand commerce in national currencies due to the dollar’s instability, according to the Kremlin.

If Russia invades Ukraine, U.S. President Joe Biden has stated that Russian corporations may lose their capacity to deal in dollars as a result of sanctions.
