The news: Bharat Biotech has announced on Wednesday that a booster shot of their Covaxin COVID-19 vaccine, given six months after the last of two doses, neutralises both the Omicron and Delta coronavirus strains.
What’s happened: Blood serum was obtained from 13 people 28 days following their booster vaccination at the Emory Vaccine Center in Atlanta for the study. Ocugen Inc, a Bharat Biotech partner, sponsored the event (OCGN.O).
What they’re saying: “The neutralisation activity of Covaxin-boosted sera against the Omicron variant was comparable to that found in mRNA vaccine-boosted sera,” Bharat Biotech said in a statement. “Neutralizing antibodies were found in more than 90% of all people who were given Covaxin.”
Covaxin, India’s first COVID-19 vaccine, was given an emergency-use listing by the WHO late last year. It has been given out in excess of 201 million doses throughout the country.
