COVID-19 grips Indian cricket team, Shikhar Dhawan and Ruturaj Gaikwad test positive among others

The Indian cricket team was hit by a COVID-19 outbreak on Wednesday, when four players – openers Shikhar Dhawan and Ruturaj Gaikwad, middle order batter Shreyas Lyer, and net bowler Navdeep Saini – and three support staff tested positive for the virus during their mandatory isolation period before the start of the West Indies series.

The news: After the viral outbreak, Mayank Agarwal was added to India’s ODI team on Wednesday night for the next series. Following their break from the South Africa series, the Indian squad arrived in Ahmedabad on January 31 for the next white-ball series against the West Indies after a three-day isolation period.

  • The series kicks off on February 6 in Ahmedabad with India’s 1000th ODI match.
  • Mayank has been added to the All-India Senior Selection Committee.

What they’re saying: “After seven members, including three players from Team India (Senior Men), tested positive for COVID-19 following three rounds of RT-PCR testing, the All-India Senior Selection Committee has added Mayank Agarwal to India’s ODI squad,” the BCCI said in a press release.

  • “The members were told to arrive in Ahmedabad on January 31, 2022, for the Paytm three-match ODI and T201 series against the West Indies. Every member was also asked to take an RT-PCR test at home before leaving for Ahmedabad, and travel was only allowed if the test came back negative, according to the statement.
  • “The RT-PCR tests done on Monday (January 31st) on opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan and fast bowler Navdeep Saini (standby player) both returned positive results, according to the BCCI.
  • “Fielding Coach T. Dilip and Security Liaison Officer B. Lokesh’s RT-PCR tests conducted on Monday (January 31st) have returned positive results,” the board wrote.
  • “Batsman Ruturaj Galkwad’s RT-PCR test conducted on Tuesday (February 1st) has returned a positive result. He had tested negative during the first round of testing on Monday,” it added.

Batsman Shreyas lyer and Sports Massage Therapist Rajeev Kumar’s RT-PCR tests conducted on Wednesday (February 2nd) have returned positive results. Both had tested negative in the first two rounds of testing.

The players who tested positive for COVID will remain in isolation until complete recovery, the BCCI added.
