The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday issued a notice to Telangana BJP leader, T. Raja Singh for allegedly threatening people to vote for his party in Uttar Pradesh.
The news: The notice said the BJP MLA from Telangana has prima facie violated provisions of the poll code, the Indian Penal Code, and the Representation of the People Act.
What they are saying: The poll panel cited a video clip of Raja Singh’s purported remarks while issuing him the notice.
- In a notice the EC said, “A video clip of T. Raja Singh, Member of Telangana Legislative Assembly from Bhartiya Janata Party is widely circulating on various media platforms.”
- The notice said Singh has prima facie violated provisions of the poll code, the Indian Penal Code and the Representation of the People Act.
- The Commission has given him 24 hours to respond to the notice as to why appropriate penal action under criminal law should not be initiated against him and also as to why appropriate action for violation of Model Code of Conduct should not be taken against him.
- If there is no response within the stipulated time, the EC will take appropriate action or decision in the matter.
