Families of Air India crash victims will build a hospital in Kerala for rescuers

The structure will be built for a Public Health Centre (PHC), which will be the sole government health facility near the crash site.

The News : In order to create a hospital for the residents who went to the scene and assisted in the rescue effort, the survivors and relatives of those who perished in the Air India Express aeroplane crash at Karipur international airport two years ago raised a sum of 50 lakh. The Public Health Centre (PHC), the only government-run medical institution close to the crash site, will have a new structure built for it.

• To show their appreciation for those who carried out the risky rescue mission that memorable night, they pooled their funds from the compensation they received to build the PHC.

What happened : On August 7, the second anniversary of the accident, an action forum that was established under the Malabar Development Forum (MDF) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the District Medical Officer (DMO) to build the hospital building for the PHC with in-patient facilities, a pharmacy, and a laboratory.

• MDF Chairman Abdurahiman Edakkuni told PTI that the action forum, which consists of the survivors and families of 184 passengers, has contributed a total of 50 lakh for the cause.

• “The distance to the closest hospital on the day of the accident was about eight kilometres. Just 300 metres from the crash scene is a PHC, but it is unequipped. In light of the fact that first responders saved many lives on that critical night, the forum has chosen to build a hospital for them. It’s a way of thanking the villagers who raced to assist the travellers, “added Mr. Edakkuni. On August 7, 2020, an AIE flight from Dubai carrying 190 passengers overshot the tabletop runway here, crashed into a 35-foot gully, and disintegrated on contact, killing 18 people, including the captain and co-pilot.

• Kozhikode DMO, R Renuka, and Edakkuni, the MDF chairman, all signed the MoU. Construction will start as soon as the health department grants the go-ahead, according to Mr. Edakkuni. Thanks to the Forum, who hired foreign attorneys to represent the claim against the airline and the insurance provider, almost everyone won the insurance benefit.

• Depending on the injuries they sustained in the plane crash, according to sources, the insurance amount varies from person to person.

“Some won less than $75,000, and several received more than $1 million. Over 5 crore rupees have been awarded to those who suffered severe injuries. Everything is determined by the wounds they received in the collision, “sources reported.

• In the immediate aftermath of the disaster, the government also provided compensation for the victims and their relatives.
