On Friday, a massive fire in a building at the site of Europe’s largest nuclear power plant was extinguished, and officials claimed the plant was running smoothly. The complex had been seized by Russian forces in severe combat that had generated worldwide concern.

The fire at the Zaporizhzhia site, officials said, started at a training centre and not at the plant itself. There was no more fighting, the fire was out, radioactivity was normal, and Russian soldiers were in control, according to an official at Energoatom, the state-owned company that operates Ukraine’s four nuclear power reactors.

A fire broke out at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in southeast Ukraine on Friday after an attack by Russian forces, the plant’s spokesperson said.
The World Health Organization is seriously concerned about the “humanitarian catastrophe” taking place in Ukraine, a senior official told Reuters on Thursday, between the triple threat of war, COVID-19 and an ongoing outbreak of polio.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy called on Europe to prevent a “nuclear catastrophe” after a fire broke out at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant on Friday following a Russian attack.
