Glenmark launches first Nasal spray ‘FabiSpray’ to fight coronavirus in adults

Glenmark Pharmaceuticals launched a nasal spray in India on Wednesday to treat adult patients with the coronavirus illness (COVID-19). FabiSpray, a Nitric Oxide Nasal Spray, was developed in collaboration with SaNOtize Research & Development Corp, a Canadian pharmaceutical business.

The news: As part of an accelerated approval process, the Mumbai-based pharmaceutical company gained manufacturing-marketing authorisation for the Nitric Oxide Nasal Spray from India’s drug regulator, the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI).

What they said: “The major objectives of the Phase 3 study in India were reached, with viral load reductions of 94 per cent in 24 hours and 99 per cent in 48 hours. In COVID-19 patients, Nitric Oxide Nasal Spray (NONS) was shown to be safe and well tolerated. Glenmark will offer NONS under the FabiSpray brand,” the official statement reads.

  • The COVID-19 virus is killed by FabiSpray in the upper airways. According to the makers, the Nitric Oxide Nasal is sprayed over the nasal mucosa, which functions as a physical and chemical barrier against the virus. According to the statement, it will prevent the infection from incubating and spreading to the lungs.
  • “This underlines our commitment to offering yet another safe and effective antiviral treatment for COVID-19, and we are certain that it will provide patients with a much-needed and timely therapy alternative,” said chief commercial officer of Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Ltd, Robert Crockart.

In addition: In July 2021, the firm announced an exclusive long-term strategic agreement with SaNOtize of Canada to produce and commercialise the nasal spray. Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Nepal, Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam are among the Asian markets where the spray will be sold.

Facts and figures: Meanwhile, the country recorded 71,365 new cases in the last 24 hours on Wednesday, bringing the total number of cases to 4,24,10,976. The death toll has risen to 505,279 people.

  • The number of active cases has dropped below 9,00,000, with the caseload now at 8,92,828, according to the data
