India rejects the Rana Ayyub harassment case

India on Monday, angrily reacted to the United Nations mission in Geneva’s allegations of “judicial harassment” against journalist Rana Ayyub. The charges were called “baseless and unwarranted”, asserting that the country upholds the rule of law and that no one is above it.

The news: In a tweet, India’s Permanent Mission in Geneva stated, “Allegations of so-called judicial harassment are baseless and unwarranted. India upholds the rule of law while emphasizing that no one is above the law. We expect Special Rapporteurs (SRs) to be objective and well-informed. Advancing a false narrative only taints the reputation of @UNGeneva.”

  • According to official sources in New Delhi, the matter will be followed by a note verbale from the Indian mission in Geneva.

What’s going on: Earlier, the UN in Geneva tweeted about “relentless misogynistic and sectarian online attacks” on journalist Ayyub.

  • Sources in the Enforcement Directorate said earlier this month that the agency had attached over Rs 1.77 crore worth of Ayyub’s bank deposits in connection with a money-laundering investigation.
  • Ayyub has denied the accusations.
