Exploring all possible mechanisms to evacuate Indian citizens in Sumy: Indian Embassy in Ukraine

After a flurry of desperate video appeals from Indian students stranded in northeast Ukraine’s Sumy, the Indian embassy in the war-torn country today said it’s exploring “all possible mechanisms” to evacuate them safely and securely.

The news: The embassy in its latest tweet on Saturday morning, said it has discussed evacuation and identification of exit routes with all interlocutors including the international humanitarian organisation Red Cross.

  • “Exploring all possible mechanisms to evacuate Indian citizens in Sumy, safely & securely. Discussed evacuation & identification of exit routes with all interlocuters including Red Cross. Control room will continue to be active until all our citizens are evacuated. Be Safe Be Strong,” it said.
  • With more Indians air lifted from war-hit zones of Ukraine’s Kharkiv and other cities, AirAsia flight carrying 170 Indian evacuees from Suceava in Romania landed in Delhi on Saturday.
  • This was the first such flight operated by the Bengaluru-based budget carrier under ‘Operation Ganga’, a central government initiative to bring back Indian citizens from Ukraine.
  • Meanwhile, three C-17 heavy lift transport aircrafts of the Indian Air Force, which took off on Friday from the Hindan air base, landed back at Hindan on Saturday morning.
  • These flights evacuated 629 Indian nationals from Romania, Slovakia and Poland. The flights also carried 16.5 tonnes of relief load from India to these countries.
  • Till date the IAF has flown 10 flights to bring back 2056 passengers, while taking 26 tonnes of relief load to these countries, as part of Operation Ganga.
  • Besides the Indian Air Force (IAF), IndiGo airlines also brought back 229 Indian nationals on Saturday.
  •  India has been ramping up the evacuating process of its citizens through special flights from Ukraine’s western neighbours such as Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, and Poland as the Ukrainian airspace has been shut since February 24, due to a Russian military offensive.
