Level-3 fire kills 6 in Mumbai, ex-gratia of Rs 7 lakh announced

At least six people died and 23 injured in a major blaze erupted on18th floor of Kamla building opposite Gandhi Hospital at Gowalia Tank in Mumbai’s Tardeo area on Saturday morning.

The news: The Mumbai Fire Brigade has designated it as a Level-3 (major) fire. Thirteen fire tenders were rushed to douse the blaze. The massive blaze that started around 7 am on the 18th floor of Kamla building has been brought under control now, officials said.

  • The Maharashtra government has announced ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh for the next of kin of those who perished in the fire. The state will also bear the cost of medical treatment for the injured.
  • The Prime Minister’s Office also promised compensation to the families of the victims and the wounded.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each for the families of those who died due to the building fire. The injured would be given Rs 50,000, the Prime Minister’s Office said.
  • Maharashtra minister Aaditya Thackeray visited the site later in the day and said the government will provide Rs 5 lakh as compensation to the families of those killed in the fire.
  • “I visited the Kamala Building fire site in Tardeo to get an on-ground update regarding the recovery operations underway. Also spoke to the residents and assured them complete assistance in this tragic hour,” he tweeted.
  • “Govt will give Rs 5L compensation to families of those citizens who lost their lives in this unfortunate fire, he added.
  • “There were reports about 2 hospitals refusing treatment, however both hospitals informed me that they have admitted & treated some of those injured in this fire,” he tweeted.
