Lok Sabha secretariat launches Digital Sansad, to ease proceedings in Parliament

The Lok Sabha secretariat has launched a new app, Digital Sansad, to make it easier for people to follow the proceedings in Parliament, as well as their own legislators. Furthermore, it will assist members of parliament in accessing services such as checking personal updates such as the status of their notices, House bulletins, and so on.

Why the App: Because MPs are not permitted to use laptop computers inside the House, the app is useful for MPs seeking parliamentary information during a debate. MPs will be able to log in for attendance, ask questions during Question Hour, and submit notices for debates or adjournment motions in the future.

  • The Digital Sansad app is available on both the Android and IOS platforms and contains nearly all of the major content from the interconnected portal of the Indian Parliament.
  • According to a senior official, the Digital Sansad is one of the few parliament apps in the world that provides a 360-degree view of legislative activities as well as member services.
  • It is the idea of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, who wants to make parliamentary proceedings more accessible to the public.
  • People will be able to access archival data related to all Lok Sabhas, in addition to proceedings in the current House. They will have access to speeches, debates, and other materials.

What they’re saying: “It is the responsibility of a dedicated legislature to keep its constituents informed of its routine proceedings.” This goal has necessitated that the Parliament keep its communication channels current with the rapidly changing technological landscape. In line with this viewpoint, the Parliament began to expand its digital footprint. “Parliament’s official ‘Digital Sansad App’ is a step in that direction,” said a top functionary who did not want to be identified.

  • The app, which aims to be the Indian Parliament’s digital interface with the younger generation, has already attracted over 8000 users from India and other countries such as the United States and Saudi Arabia.
  • The app, which is being developed by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, will provide people with all Parliamentary updates. “Citizens now have easier access to general information on MPs, budget speeches since 1947, and House debates from the 12th Lok Sabha to the 17th Lok Sabha.”
  • The App will also include a live stream of Sansad proceedings, the day’s major news, and other features. “Aside from a virtual tour of the Parliament, the 2022 Budget session can also be watched live on the App,” the functionary explained.

In addition: The latest effort is part of a larger digital strategy that has resulted in a decrease in the use of papers in Parliament. Most notices are now given online by members, reducing paper usage in parliament by up to 98 per cent.

  • Physical copies of important documents, including the upcoming budget papers, will be restricted and can only be accessed online, according to a top official.

Opposition leaders, on the other hand, pointed out that during the pandemic, Parliament should have gone completely digital and allowed online meetings of its House panels. Several requests by opposition lawmakers to allow digital meetings in the last two years have been denied.
