PM Modi addressing nation while releasing PM Kisan scheme

Following Russia’s attack on Ukraine, Prime Minister Narendra Modi talked with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday, calling for a “rapid cease of bloodshed.”

The news: During the phone conversation, PM Modi also stated that the safe withdrawal and repatriation of Indian residents from Ukraine is of “utmost importance” to India.

  • According to the Prime Minister’s Office, PM Modi appealed for all parties to work together to return to the road of diplomatic negotiations, saying that the only way to settle disputes between Russia and NATO is through “honest and real” dialogue.
  • According to the PM’s Office, the leaders agreed that their officials and diplomatic teams will maintain regular touch on areas of mutual interest.
  • According to a Russian summary of the conversation, President Putin also informed Prime Minister Modi on Ukraine.
  • Putin presented the essential evaluations of “Kiev’s aggressive activities” against Donbass civilians, as well as the many years of “destructive strategy” aimed at violating the Minsk agreements.
  • It was resolved to undertake a special military action in these conditions, as well as in conjunction with the unacceptable military development of the United States and its NATO partners on the territory of Ukraine, according to a Russian statement on the conversation.
  • According to the Russian statement, PM Modi “thanked President Putin for the clarification and requested cooperation in safeguarding the security of Indian citizens already in Ukraine.”
  • “Necessary directions” will be delivered, according to President Putin.

What they said: According to the statement, some aspects of bilateral cooperation were discussed during the Russian-Indian summit in December 2021.

  • India has pushed for a de-escalation of hostilities that takes into account all countries’ legitimate security concerns.
  • The PM Modi-Putin phone call came just hours after Ukraine’s India envoy, Igor Polikha, expressed his country’s “grave dissatisfaction” with New Delhi’s stance on the deteriorating situation.
  • Igor Polikha, the Ukrainian ambassador to India, claimed that Prime Minister Modi is one of the few world leaders who President Putin listens to, and that New Delhi may use its proximity to Moscow to exert control over the situation.
  • “Prime Minister Narendra Modi is one of the most powerful and well-liked politicians in the world… I’m not sure how many world leaders Putin is likely to pay attention to. But, given Modi Ji’s-stature, I’m optimistic that, in the event of his powerful voice, Putin will think twice “According to Ambassador Polikha.

Despite Prime Minister Modi’s call for an end to the violence in Ukraine as soon as possible, India has refrained from openly condemning Russia.
