Prime Minister Narendra Modi slammed Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi for his divisive “UP, Bihar ke bhaiye” remark, as well as Congress politician Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, claiming the “family from Delhi was clapping”.

The news: “The entire country has seen what the Congress Chief Minister said here. His maalik (boss) comes from Delhi, and that maalik was standing next to him, clapping,” PM Modi made the remarks at a rally in Punjab ahead of the state’s election on Sunday.

What he said: “Guru Govind Singh was born in India. In Bihar’s Patna Sahib. Are you going to expel Guru Govind Singh from Punjab? People with such a divided mentality should not be permitted to run Punjab for even a moment,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi remarked.

In addition: PM Modi also mentioned Dalit legend Guru Ravidas, whose birth anniversary was celebrated yesterday with different political figures suspending their campaigns to visit temples.

  • “We just celebrated Sant Ravidas Jayanti yesterday. What country did he come from? Varanasi is a city in Uttar Pradesh. Are you going to expel Sant Ravidas from Punjab?” enquired Modi.

What happened: Channi made the remark while campaigning with Priyanka Gandhi on the road yesterday.

  • Punjab’s daughter-in-law, Priyanka Gandhi, is the bahu of Punjabis. Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Delhi ke bhaiye are not allowed to rule here. Channi had previously stated, “We will not allow UP bhaiyas to stray into Punjab.”
  • Priyanka Gandhi could be seen clapping and smiling. Supporters sang “Bole so nihal…” and cheered.
  • The remark appeared to be directed in part at Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who has been campaigning in Punjab for his Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

“It’s a disgrace,” said Kejriwal, adding, “We strongly reject remarks directed at any individual or society.”
