On Saturday, Congressman Rahul Gandhi spoke in support of Muslim girl students who wear the hijab, saying that allowing the issue of the headcover to get in the way of their education is robbing them of their future.
The news: On the eve of Basanti Panchami, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi tweeted, “By letting students’ hijab to obstruct their education, we are robbing India’s daughters of their future.”
What’s going on: The hijab-clad pupils, who arrived with their parents, pushed their way into the college’s courtyard gate despite a severe injunction from the authorities that wearing hijabs would be prohibited under the state government’s current dress code.
- When the girls objected, the principal told them that they were not allowed to wear hijab inside the classrooms.
- The Muslim girl students are even being asked to remove their headscarves before entering.
What are they saying: The students claimed that the government edict on status quo does not apply to Kundapur College.
- The principal responded to the students’ comment and said that the government circular applies to all of the state’s colleges.
- Rahul Gandhi even said, “all people benefit from Ma Saraswati’s knowledge. She doesn’t make any distinctions.”
