On Friday, British Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng said reports that government representatives had pressured and blackmailed MPs looked bizarre and unlikely to be accurate.

The news: On Thursday, a senior Conservative legislator accused the British government of threatening and attempting to blackmail lawmakers suspected of plotting to depose Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

  • Because of their intention to overthrow Johnson, some MPs have suffered pressure and extortion, according to William Wragg, chair of the Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee.
  • After a series of exposes regarding parties in his Downing Street mansion amid COVID lockdowns, Johnson, who gained his party’s largest majority in more than 30 years in 2019, is now fighting to maintain his control.
  • Johnson has apologised several times for the parties, claiming that he was ignorant of many of them.

What they’re saying: On May 20, 2020, he went to what he assumed was a company gathering, to which employees were urged to bring their own booze. On Tuesday, Johnson claimed that no one had informed him that the gathering was in violation of COVID standards.

  • On a trip to Australia, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss expressed her support for Johnson.

Truss stated, “The Prime Minister has my 100 per cent support. I want the Prime Minister to continue as long as possible in his job. He is doing a fantastic job. There is no leadership election.”
