Sania Mirza announces retirement after WTA tour

Sania Mirza, an Indian tennis player, announced her retirement plans after losing in the first round of the Australian Open women’s doubles.

What she says: “I’ve made the decision that this will be my final season. I’m taking it week by week,” Mirza said after the match. “I’m not sure if I’ll be able to finish the season, but I want to.”

  • Slovenia’s Kaja Juvan and Tamara Zidansek beat Mirza and Kichenok 6-4, 7-6 in the first round to advance in the Grand Slam.

The backstory: Mirza made her senior debut in 2003 and now holds the record for being India’s highest-ranked female singles player (no.27).

  • She retired from singles in 2013 after winning noteworthy matches over Martina Hingis, Victoria Azarenka, Svetlana Kuznetsova, and Dinara Safina, among others, throughout the course of her 10-year career.
  • Mirza’s singles career was cut short due to injury, but she specialised in doubles and won the Wimbledon and US Open in 2015, as well as the Australian Open (2016) in women’s doubles with Hingis.
  • She has won three Grand Slam titles in mixed doubles, making her one of India’s most accomplished tennis players.
