Sec 144 in Agartala after clash between BJP, Congress activist

Following a clash between ruling Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress activists during the latter’s joining programme in chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb’s Assembly constituency, Banamalipur, the Tripura administration imposed restrictions under Section 144 CrPC (Criminal Procedure Code) in some parts of Agartala on Saturday night.

The news: The clash caused minor damage to a BJP local party office. During the skirmishes, former BJP minister and lawmaker Sudip Roy Barman, who just joined the Congress, received minor injuries. There was no report of injuries from any of the parties involved. The ban was in effect from 10:30 p.m. until 5 a.m.

What they said: “We have started our inquiry to find out how the fights began and who is responsible,” a senior police official stated. So yet, no complaints have been received. Throughout the night, security forces were stationed to prevent any unforeseen incidents. If anyone is found to have been involved in the incident, they will be prosecuted.”

  • Later, the state administration placed restrictions in Agartala, prohibiting groups of five or more persons from gathering in specific areas.
  • “It is anticipated that additional law and order difficulties would arise throughout the night, and the additional superintendent of police (Urban), West Tripura, Camp at SDPO Office (Sadar) has urged that prohibitory orders be issued to ensure law and order.”
  • “I am satisfied that an immediate Prohibitory Order is required to safeguard public peace; otherwise, Law and Order may deteriorate,” the order states.

Later, Roy Barman accused the cops of inaction.

Following the skirmishes, both major parties held protest demonstrations in the late evening, calling for action to be taken against the occurrence.
