The Norwegian foreign ministry said on Friday that representatives from Afghanistan’s Taliban will travel in Norway on Sunday for three days of negotiations on how to address a humanitarian catastrophe.

The news: From January 23 to 25, Taliban representatives will meet with Norwegian authorities as well as diplomats from a number of other nations.

What she said: “These gatherings do not imply that the Taliban has gained legitimacy or acceptance. However, we must speak with the country’s de facto authorities,” Anniken Huitfeldt, Norway’s foreign minister, said in a statement.

  • “We cannot allow the current political environment to exacerbate the humanitarian crisis,” she stated.
  • “There will also be meetings between the Taliban group and other Afghans with diverse backgrounds. Women leaders, journalists, and others fighting to protect human rights and address humanitarian, economic, social, and political challenges are among them,” said Norway.

Since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan last year, millions of Afghans have fallen farther into poverty, with aid programmes disrupted and food security deteriorating.
