Indian equity indices fall as Russia-Ukraine war escalates

It seems, it’s not just the two countries at war who are at loss, but that bloody cry is affecting the whole world in many ways, one of which is the sensex. 

The news: Indian equity indices fell sharply on Friday, due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine crisis. As a result of reports of a nuclear power plant on fire amid fierce fighting between Ukrainian and Russian troops, Asian equity markets suffered heavy losses, while oil prices rose.

  • The benchmark BSE Sensex fell 1,027 points, or 1.86 per cent, to 54,076 as of 10:29 a.m., while the broader NSE Nifty fell 302 points, or 1.83 per cent, to 16,196.
  • Mid- and small-cap stocks were trading in the red, with the Nifty Midcap 100 index rising 1.29 per cent and small-cap stocks falling 1.40 per cent.
  • The majority of the sector gauges, as compiled by the National Stock Exchange, were in the red. In early trade, Nifty Auto and Nifty were underperforming the index, falling as much as 2.52 per cent and 1.86 per cent, respectively. Nifty Metal, on the other hand, rose as much as 0.57 per cent.
  • On a stock-by-stock basis, Asian Paints was the top Nifty loser, falling 5.18 per cent to 2,723.25. Hero MotoCorp, Maruti Suzuki, Axis Bank, and Hindustan Unilever were also laggards.
  • On the BSE, the overall market breadth was poor, with 855 shares rising and 1,559 falling.
