The new MD of Air India is the former chairperson of Turkish Airlines. Tata Sons have recently appointed former Turkish Airlines Chairperson Ilker Ayci as their Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director for Air India on Monday.

The News: Welcoming the new Chief Executive Officer Tata sons said, “After careful consideration, the board approved the appointment of Ilker Ayci as CEO and MD of Air India. This appointment is contingent on regulatory approvals.”

  • Tata Sons have also stated that Ayci will begin with his responsibilities on or before April 1, 2022.

Whats going on: Tata Group recently officially took over Air India from the government. Air India is the Tata Group’s third airline brand; it owns a majority stake in AirAsia India and Vistara, a joint venture with Singapore Airlines Ltd.

  • The holding company of the salt-to-software conglomerate is Tata Sons.
  • Air India currently controls over 4,400 domestic and 1,800 international landing and parking slots at domestic airports, as well as 900 international slots.
  • Tatas established Tata Airlines in 1932, which was later renamed Air India in 1946. The airline was taken over by the government in 1953, but JRD Tata remained its chairman until 1977.
  • The handover marked Air India’s return to Tatas after a 69-year absence.

What are they saying: Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran commented on Ayci’s appointment, saying, “Ilker is an aviation industry leader who guided Turkish Airlines to its current success. We are delighted to welcome Ilker to the Tata Group, where he will lead Air India into the next chapter of its history.”
