Foreign Minister Liz Truss will welcome EU Commissioner Maros Sefcovic at her official country house on Thursday in an attempt to re-energize discussions with the European Union to tackle post-Brexit trade concerns.

The news: Truss took over the long-running negotiations on the implementation of the regulations controlling commerce between the United Kingdom, Northern Ireland, and EU-member Ireland last month – an accord that the United Kingdom signed but now claims is unworkable in practise.

  • “The EU has a clear obligation to assist in the resolution of the Protocol’s various difficulties,” Truss said in a statement before of her first face-to-face meeting with Sefcovic.
  • “As fellow believers in liberty and democracy, we should be able to strike a solution that benefits Northern Ireland while also allowing us to realise our relationship’s full potential.”
  • The delegates will negotiate over three sessions in the bucolic surroundings of the Chevening house in Kent, south of London, and share a dinner of Scottish smoked salmon, Welsh lamb, and English apple pie.
  • However, a change of setting does not necessitate a change of strategy.

What’s going on: Truss takes over from her predecessor David Frost, who resigned in December due to disagreements with Prime Minister Boris Johnson on domestic policy.

She urged the EU to take a reasonable approach.

  • The EU maintains that it has attempted to settle the difficulties, and voiced disappointment on Sunday that Truss had used a newspaper article to reiterate Britain’s preparedness to unilaterally stop the agreement.
  • On Monday, a spokesperson for the European Commission emphasised the bloc’s recent plans to decrease customs paperwork and checks on agricultural exports.
  • The spokeswoman stated, “We are committed to finding long-term, lasting solutions. We have proven time and time again that we are capable of presenting viable solutions and that we keep our promises.”
