Two Indians, one Pakistani national killed In UAE oil Blasts

Three people including two Indian nationals and a Pakistani national were killed and six wounded as a suspected drone attack blew up petrol tanks near a major oil storage facility in the United Arab Emirates capital Abu Dhabi.

The news: On Twitter, some people posted what appeared to be the site of the explosion, showing a thick plume of black smoke rising high into the sky.

What they’re saying: “UAE authorities have reported that an explosion near ADNOC’s storage tanks in Mussafah has resulted in three casualties, including two Indian nationals,” the embassy tweeted. For more information, the Mission @IndembAbuDhabi is in contact with the relevant UAE authorities.”

  • ADNOC is an acronym for Abu Dhabi National Oil Company.
  • According to Reuters, Abu Dhabi Police claimed in a statement that “initial investigations found parts of a tiny plane that could possibly be a drone at both sites that could have caused the explosion and the fire,” and that “serious damage” was caused.

What’s going: The Houthi rebels in Yemen have claimed responsibility for the attack. According to Reuters, the group’s military spokesman claimed the operation was initiated “deep in the UAE” and that more information would be released in the coming hours.

With a population of roughly 3.5 million expatriates, Indians are the largest ethnic group in the UAE. According to the Indian Embassy in the UAE, Indians account up over 30 per cent of the country’s population and approximately 15 per cent of the diaspora in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
