Will Smith punches Chris Rock on Oscar stage

Will Smith is going viral for what happened at the 94th Academy Awards. Although, Smith won the Best Actor at the Oscars, but something way quirky took place on the same stage. 

The news: Furious over Chris Rock, who was the presenter at the gala, Smith slapped and swore at him for making a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith. 

  • This exact moment which happened at the Sunday gala went viral and left the viewers stunned with questions, of it being scripted or genuine. 

What Happened: Chris Rock, while presenting the award for the best documentary, did a short comedy act on stage. He cracked a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s tightly cropped hair comparing her to Demi Moore’s appearance in the film ‘G.I. Jane’  and also suggested to appear in a sequel.

Triggered over his remarks, Smith slapped Rock, returned to his seat and yelled “Keep my wife’s name out of your f***g mouth”.

•          While the audiences were shocked following Smith’s rage. Chris Rock told the audience, “Will Smith just smacked the shit out of me. It was a G.I. Jane joke. That was the greatest night in the history of television.”

What are they saying:  While accepting his award, Smith apologized to the audience “I want to apologize to the Academy. I want to apologize to all my fellow nominees. This is a beautiful moment and I’m not crying for winning an award. It’s not about winning an award for me. It’s about being able to shine a light on all of the people”. 

  • Smith further added, “Art imitates life. I look like the crazy father, just like they said about Richard Williams. Love will make you do crazy things,”.

In an emotional speech Smith said, “I’m being called on in my life to love people and to protect people and to be a river to my people. I know to do what we do, you got to be able to take abuse. You got to be able to have people talk crazy about you. In this business, you got to be able to have people disrespecting you. And you got to smile and you got to pretend like that’s okay.”

  • Following the incident, the organizer of the Oscars ceremony tweeted that it does not condone violence. 
  • “The Academy does not condone violence of any form,” the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences tweeted.
