According to the Kyodo news agency, around 6,000 new coronavirus infections will be recorded in Japan’s western prefecture of Osaka on Tuesday, greatly exceeding the previous all-time high of 3,760 set over the weekend.

The news: The number of new cases in Japan’s capital, Tokyo, is also approaching record levels, thanks to the highly infectious Omicron variety, which has pushed the country’s new cases to near-record levels, with more than 25,000 in recent days.

  • The governors of Tokyo and the surrounding prefectures decided this week to petition the federal government for anti-infection measures, such as limiting the hours that pubs and restaurants are open.
  • According to Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno, ten prefectures have submitted such demands. On Friday, an official decision on the so-called “quasi-emergency” measures would most likely be made.
  • This would follow restrictions imposed earlier this month in three places with US military bases after Omicron infections appeared to have spread to nearby towns.

On Monday, Tokyo’s hospital bed occupancy rate for COVID-19 patients reached 21.1 per cent, surpassing a vital threshold for additional pandemic precautions. A rise to 50 per cent would necessitate the proclamation of a complete state of emergency.
