Residents in Yemen reported Tuesday that internet connections were mostly restored after a four-day outage caused by air strikes by a Saudi-led coalition on the Red Sea city of Hodeidah, which damaged telecoms equipment.

What they’re saying: Hussein al-Ezzi, the deputy foreign minister of the Iran-aligned Houthi group, welcomed efforts to repair the damage and restore services in a Twitter post.

  • “To all friends and loved ones: We missed you,” he said.
  • NetBlocks, an internet blockage monitoring service, stated Monday at 10.00 p.m. GMT that services were beginning to be restored.

What’s going on: Yemen has been divided for seven years between an internationally recognised government located in the southern city of Aden and the Houthi organisation, which controls the majority of the country’s northern territory.

  • The alliance claimed the strikes on Friday targeted Houthi military capabilities in Hodeidah, the country’s major landing point for its undersea internet link.
  • Yemenis were unable to send money out of the country due to the outage.
  • Millions have been thrown into poverty as a result of the war and the following economic collapse, and regions of Yemen are on the verge of famine.
